Kitchen Table
We’ve bought new chairs and because of that, we needed a bigger kitchen table. Currently a solid table top with a steel x-shape base is still fashionable in The Netherlands. But I do not like the obstruction for the middle persion. If you don’t want this you get thick legs on each corner. However that would require us to get a table bigger than we wanted. The high end brands have slimmer tables, but that would be very expensive. And our table is very much something that gets used.
So I decided to order a solid oak table top and make my own legs. The legs will be the same thickness as the table top and will be 45 degrees on each corner. This would leave more than enough room to put the new chairs in between.
The table top is way too big for my little workbench. But with a few clamps it turned out to be a sturdy construction. My workbench is small, but very heavy (140KG). The first task is to add some steel profiles to prevent the table top from warping when the temperature or humidity changes. With a saw (azebiki) and router plane I’ve got them in. At least…half way. Doing it by hand was too much work. So a put some wood underneath…
Next part is to cut a slot for the legs. 40% of the leg will go through the table. The rest supports the table (plus some extra steel reinforcement).
The table ended up being too heavy to manoeuvre completely assembled into the kitchen. So I decided to do the final assembly of the legs on the old table in the kitchen.
A few coats of hard wax / oil on it and this is the result:
